Your Ally in Agricultural Rehabilitation

Large-scale ecological restoration services with a focus on extensive agriculture and land management in the Eastern Cape.

About Us

The Baviaanskloof Bewarea is a landscape-based ecological restoration implementation entity based in the Baviaanskloof of the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

The name ‘Bewarea’ (pronounced buh·vuh·ree·uh) is the Afrikaans term for Conservancy. We chose this name to communicate and acknowledge our commitment to our local landscape and its people.

We have been operating as a non-profit company since 2020, but we have been building our expertise in restoration and rehabilitation since 2017 with our founding partner, Living Lands.

We provide ecological restoration and conservancy management support services to project developers and landowners across the Eastern Cape while maintaining a long-term commitment to supporting livelihoods within the Baviaanskloof landscape.

Our Home

The Baviaanskloof is a remarkable place characterized by its unique biodiversity, where a variety of ecosystems meet among rugged landscape features.

This remote area is home to a diverse community of people who all have a personal connection with their surroundings, fostering a strong sense of community and sense-of-place.

The local agriculture and tourism offerings reflect the resilience and creativity of its inhabitants, who cultivate the land while surrounded by the rich natural heritage that makes the Baviaanskloof truly extraordinary.

Our Work

We work across a variety of disciplines that all share challenges related to land degradation, land-use, livelihood support and natural resource management.

Wildlife Management

Wildlife holds significant economic and biodiversity value, making effective management a key aspect of land-use strategies

Through monitoring, reporting, and a strong partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, we assist landowners and conservancies in implementing successful wildlife management practices.

Landscape Rehabilitation & Restoration services

Our rehabilitation and restoration services include a variety of interventions that are deployed based on degradation status, site conditions, and financing available. Key restoration intervention types include soil erosion control, invasive alien plant control, fire management, and revegetation using native plants.

Our systematic approach to ecological rehabilitation ensures both land owner and project developer expectations are met whilst implementing
cost-effective techniques.

Conservancy Planning & Management

Conservancies are an important tool for collaborative land management. With the reality of dwindling government resources and support, we see the need to support conservancies with improved planning and management capacity.

With strong links to relevant local government entities, we partner with conservancies for improved natural resource management in the Eastern Cape. Our local Baviaanskloof Hartland Conservancy was established 10 years ago and has since become a flagship conservancy in the province.

Baviaanskloof Community Support

The ability to support the Baviaanskloof landscape and community remains core to our purpose and operations. We increase access to much-needed local services to land owners and resident groups through coordinated administrative and information support, infrastructure maintenance, affordable equipment rental, and diesel sales from our
local depot.

Together with proceeds from restoration services, we welcome donations towards supporting the Baviaanskloof at large.

Our Team

Our work is challenging at the best of times. It is thus no surprise that our team is a bunch of die-hards who will go the extra mile to get the work done.

With much support from our partnering organisation, Living Lands, our team comprises a relatively small management team to coordinate the necessary operations for an implementation team of approximately 20 individuals.

Restoration & Implementation Team

Working as smaller teams of three to five individuals, our restoration and implementation teams are equipped and experienced for on-the-ground work.

We currently employ permanent teams from both the
Baviaanskoof and Langkloof communities.

Management Team

Our three person director group currently acts as a management group covering all operational, financial, and logistical management needs.

Further human resource and bookkeeping needs are fulfilled by outsourced capacity.
